The term Challenging was looked at in a different light today. Some feel it is intimidating the client into thinking we are correct and we know better than them.
Challenging does come across as if you are taking the client on and wanting them to preform for you right then and there. Instead of the term challenging i would replace it with 'Exploring', this seems alot friendlier and not such a scary prospect.
Exploring is something you and the client can do together.

I agree with you that 'exploring' would be a better word in many instances when providing guidance. However, I don't think it's unfair to challenge people when providing guidance. Getting a job or into university is a challenge in itself for many and individuals need to know what what will be expected of them in these roles. (I will discuss this more in my blog later).
ReplyDeleteI like the last comment you put - exploring is something you and the client can do together. Whatever way you put it, challenging someone has a connotation of you knowing what's best and having power over someone.
