Well i found todays lecture quite interesting, its something we should have had alot earlier on in the year or last trimester. But in the fashion of the careers department here i have learnt to except things to be done backwards!!
Anyway well worth the wait. What Andrew went over was pretty much what we or i had witnessed on placement a Careers Scotland but it was explained in a lot more detail. Even though i do argue against strick structures and career precedures, i feel i have changed my mind slighty.
Before, i felt i would sink and struggle if i ever went to work for them but really the way they go about guidance isnt all bad. I think with Andrew explaing more about the ways of guidance, he has helped me understand it.
The career journey is aseful tool to use with a client, i just couldnt get to grips with it before. ' Guidance has to be more concerned with the planning process, rather than the plan' (John Malkin)
.
.
. More focus on the ....decision making....How you get to that decision
This makes sense to me, not sure if it will to anyone else!!!

I agree with you Holly, the career planning journey is a useful tool to have. I have seen a few Careers Advisers on my Careers Scotland placement who were applying the Career Planning Journey. Some of them were very enthusiastic about it!
ReplyDeleteI could imagine that if you did not have such a structure, it would be easy for each Career Advisor to develop their own way of doing things. I can understand why Careers Scotland provides the CPJ, as it ensures that everyone has a format to cover all the main points. However, when I was on placement not all of the advisors used this, and I suppose with time and experience you could apply your own style as long as it still covered the main points.
Also I agree that it would have been useful to hear this presentation before placement in Careers Scotland.
I enjoyed hearing about the CPJ too even although the careers advisers I saw at Careers Scotland really didn't seem to bother with it all (and appeared to be doing an great job) They did have years of experience though and had developed their own style. I think as a starting point the CPJ does have some good principles. I couldn't imagine doing things nearly so ridgidly, and its a shame that innovation doesn't seem to be encouraged at all at CS, however it is a starting point to work with.
